May 18, 2017

On behalf of Members of Council and the City of Markham, I am pleased to extend a warm and sincere welcome to all those attending the African Union Anniversary hosted by the African Union 6th Region Canada Foundation, Inc. (AU6RC).

The City of Markham is proud to be recognized as Canada’s most diverse city. We take pride in celebrating the diversity of the many culture and traditions that people who call Markham home from all over the world. I recognize the contribution that the people of African descent have had to the advancement of humanity and the building of nations.

Today’s occasion highlights and celebrates the 54th Anniversary of the African Union and the 5th Anniversary of the 6th Region Declaration, as declared on May 25th, 2012 by the African Union Heads of State. The Declaration now makes all people of African descent (African Diaspora) the official 6th Region of the African Continent. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in Youth,” is very relevant in our current global economy where borders are no longer defined by geography and provides an enormous opportunity for today’s youth to contribute to our society.

As Mayor, I am delighted to have this opportunity to extend my best wishes on this special day.
