Greetings from the Leader of the Official Opposition
54th Anniversary of the African Union &
5th Anniversary of the Sixth Region Declaration
May 18, 2017
I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to all those gathered to celebrate the 54th anniversary of the African Union and the fifth anniversary of the Sixth Region Declaration.
Ontarians of African descent have been making positive contributions to our province and country since before Confederation, 150 years ago. This celebration and flag-raising is a fitting tribute to that legacy, and is affirmation that the Afro-Canadian community is a vital part of Ontario’s social fabric.
This year’s focus on making investments in youth is proof of African Union 6th Region Canada’s (AU6RC) positive vision for the future. Your work furthers the goals strived for in the International Decade for People of African Descent, and I commend you for your efforts.
Ontario is home to people of all walks of life, and the AU6RC adds to our province’s diversity and culture. Together, all of us can work to ensure that the values we champion—freedom, democracy, and human rights—are what unite Ontarians of all backgrounds.
Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful celebration.
